Two roads lie before me.
One scarce more than a trail,
the other close to highway standards.
Which would be the better one for me?
Conventional wisdom would say,
'take the beaten path
for surety lies beside it.'
Yet, is that what I truly want?
Security and something given?
The selfish part of me says yes,
but I can't humor her forever,
and once I go down a road,
I don't think I can change course.
Though how do I know
that the small footpath
will lead to happiness?
What if it is an unhappy ending?
What if I get lost,
and can't find the path again?
No one can tell me either,
for that's cheating.
Warring thoughts battle
inside my head,
as I stare down the paths,
with no easy answer in sight.
